Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, my country only had a small aluminum smelter in Fushun, which could not be produced due to the destruction of the war, and some major equipments were almost completely dismantled abroad. In addition, there are several small workshop-style aluminum processing factories in Shanghai, which are also in a semi-shutdown state. Before liberation, there were only 5 aluminum processing factories in my country that could produce aluminum foil and industrial pure aluminum plates for making utensils.

In the early 1930s, with the vigorous rise of the domestic tobacco industry, more aluminum foil was needed for packaging, and all the aluminum foil used at that time had to be imported. Under this situation, three aluminum companies in Canada, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, using the old equipment eliminated from an aluminum foil factory in Switzerland, established an aluminum foil production plant in Shanghai, which is the first aluminum foil factory in my country. The total investment of the plant is US$1 million, with Alcan accounting for 50%, Swissaluminum for 35% and British Aluminum for 15%.

From 1954 to 2022, after 68 years of construction, my country has become the world's largest aluminum producer, consumer and primary power. In 2001, my country's alumina demand was 7240kt, electrolytic aluminum production was 3420kt, import volume was 529.5kt, export volume was 408.8kt, and apparent consumption was 3540kt. Since then, it has become the largest country in the world's aluminum industry.

In 2012, my country's electrolytic aluminum output was about 20,000kt, and in 2021, my country's electrolytic aluminum output reached 38,503kt. In the past 10 years, my country's electrolytic aluminum production has increased by 93%.
